OTTAWA - Canada is fighting back. Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will match the latest U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.
Carney faced the press and addressed the public on Saturday morning in Ottawa with a message: Canada walked away from an unfair trade deal with the United States after months of negotiations, saying, "they asked too much and offered too little."
The Canadian government was even prepared to make compromises like bringing American alcohol back to store shelves to make a path toward a fair and comprehensive agreement, but would not concede its sovereignty or risk Canadian industries.
Canada does not want this fight but has to stand up for itself and focus on what it can control - building a stronger economy, Carney said.
