Synag Media Corp. (“SYNAG,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a digital news and information organization. We respect privacy while carrying out our public-interest journalism, operating our digital services, communicating with readers and contributors, and supporting our business through subscriptions, advertising and related services.
Our privacy commitments
This Privacy Notice applies to synag.ca and any other SYNAG website, mobile application, newsletter, account, digital product, advertising service or online feature that links to this Notice. It should be read together with SYNAG’s Terms of Use, Cookie Notice, Editorial Standards, News Tip or Source Guidelines, and any additional notice presented when information is collected.
“Personal information” generally means information about an identifiable individual. The precise definition and legal treatment of particular information may differ depending on the province, territory, state or country whose law applies.
If you create or maintain a SYNAG account, we may collect your name or display name, email address, username, authentication credentials, profile information, language or regional preferences, account settings, communication preferences, subscription preferences and records relating to account activity.
If you subscribe to newsletters, alerts, breaking-news notifications or other communications, we may collect your email address, subscription choices, communication preferences and information about your interactions with those communications.
If you contact us, participate in a survey, enter a contest, advertise with us or submit material, we may collect information such as your name, email address, telephone number, organization or affiliation, correspondence, photographs, videos, audio recordings, documents, comments, complaints, feedback, story submissions and other information you choose to provide.
News tips and communications with our newsroom may contain sensitive information about you, other individuals, organizations or events. Depending on the circumstances, this may include contact information, photographs, recordings, documents, allegations, location information, employment information, political information, legal information, financial information, health-related information or other material relevant to potential reporting.
If you inquire about advertising, sponsored content, partnerships or other business opportunities, we may collect business contact information, organization and title, billing and campaign information, advertising materials and related correspondence. If SYNAG accepts political advertising, we may also collect information required by election, advertising, transparency or record-keeping rules, including the advertiser or authorized representative, the person or entity on whose behalf the advertisement is purchased, campaign details, dates, amounts, authorization information and the advertisement itself. Information required to be public may appear in SYNAG’s Political Ad Registry.
When you use SYNAG’s digital services, we or our service providers may automatically receive technical and usage information such as Internet Protocol address, approximate location derived from an IP address, browser and operating system, device type, device or advertising identifiers where permitted, referring site, pages and articles viewed, videos viewed, searches, clicks, session duration, timestamps, language settings, advertisement interactions and diagnostic or crash information.
If you interact with SYNAG through a social-media service or another third-party platform, we may receive information the platform permits to be shared with us based on your settings and that platform’s policies.
Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, SYNAG may use personal information to:
SYNAG may use automated technologies to assist with content recommendations, search and ranking, spam and fraud detection, content moderation, translation, transcription, analytics, security and newsroom or administrative workflows. Automated systems should supplement rather than eliminate appropriate human editorial judgment where decisions materially affect accuracy, fairness or the integrity of SYNAG journalism. Confidential-source material or highly sensitive unpublished journalistic material should not be placed into a public general-purpose artificial-intelligence service for training or unrelated use without appropriate authorization and safeguards.
Where consent is legally required, SYNAG will seek a form of consent appropriate to the sensitivity of the information and the reasonable expectations of the individual. SYNAG will not rely on a general privacy policy as blanket consent for a materially different use when fresh consent is required by law.
As a news organization, SYNAG may collect, use and disclose information for legitimate journalistic, artistic or literary purposes. Canadian privacy laws may exclude or treat differently information handled solely for those purposes. SYNAG does not treat that journalistic treatment as a blanket exemption for ordinary commercial activities such as account administration, subscriptions, marketing, advertising, analytics, employment or general platform operations.
Journalistic activities may include researching matters of public interest, identifying and contacting sources, verifying information, conducting interviews, investigating allegations, reviewing public records and other legitimate source material, fact-checking, preparing news, analysis, commentary or documentary material, publishing and distributing journalism, and maintaining news archives and the historical record.
Submitting information through an ordinary website form, email address or social-media account does not, by itself, create a confidential-source relationship or guarantee anonymity. If confidentiality or anonymity is important, you should state that clearly when contacting SYNAG and use any secure source-contact method SYNAG makes available.
Where SYNAG expressly agrees to protect a source’s identity, access to identifying information should be restricted to personnel who reasonably require it for editorial or legal purposes. No electronic communication method is completely secure. Where legally permissible and appropriate, SYNAG may challenge or resist demands that could improperly compromise legitimate source protection.
SYNAG journalists may review court records, government records, corporate records, public meetings, official statements, public social-media posts and other legitimate sources in the course of reporting. The fact that information is accessible online does not necessarily mean SYNAG treats it as unrestricted commercial data. Use of publicly accessible information for journalism is assessed separately from its use for advertising, profiling, marketing or other commercial purposes.
Privacy rights concerning ordinary account or commercial information do not automatically require deletion or alteration of independently published journalism. Requests alleging factual errors in published articles should ordinarily be directed through SYNAG’s editorial correction or complaint process, while privacy requests should be sent to the Privacy Office.
SYNAG uses administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of personal information under its control. Measures may include access controls, authentication, encryption where appropriate, secure hosting, system monitoring, backups, role-based permissions, secure software-development practices, staff confidentiality obligations, service-provider controls, incident-response procedures and privacy or cybersecurity training.
No Internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should protect their accounts by using strong, unique passwords and keeping authentication credentials confidential.
SYNAG retains personal information only for as long as reasonably required for the purpose for which it was collected or as otherwise permitted or required by law. Retention periods may take account of the nature and sensitivity of the information, account or subscription duration, legal and regulatory requirements, fraud-prevention needs, limitation periods, disputes or investigations, and legitimate journalistic or archival purposes.
When information is no longer reasonably required, SYNAG will securely destroy, erase or anonymize it as appropriate. Published journalism and associated archives may be retained for extended periods, including indefinitely, where justified by legitimate journalistic, historical, documentary or public-interest purposes.
SYNAG maintains processes for responding to suspected loss, theft, unauthorized access, disclosure or other privacy and security incidents. Where an incident reaches a statutory notification threshold, SYNAG will notify affected individuals, regulators or other authorities as required by applicable law and may provide protective guidance where reasonably helpful.
SYNAG may use cookies, pixels, local storage, server logs, software development kits and similar technologies. These may support strictly necessary functions such as authentication and security; remember preferences; measure audience and technical performance; and, where permitted, support advertising and campaign measurement.
Where applicable law requires consent for non-essential technologies, SYNAG will provide an appropriate notice and choice mechanism. Users may also be able to manage eligible technologies through browser or device settings. Disabling certain technologies may affect some features.
SYNAG may use internal tools and third-party analytics providers to understand audience size, article and video engagement, search activity, referral sources, approximate location, device information and platform performance. Where reasonably practicable, SYNAG may use aggregated, de-identified or anonymized information for audience research, business planning, advertising measurement and product improvement.
Advertising helps support the production and distribution of journalism. SYNAG may display contextual advertising based on the content being viewed and may work with advertising or technology providers that use cookies or similar technologies for audience measurement or interest-based advertising where legally permitted.
SYNAG does not sell lists containing users’ names, private email addresses or telephone numbers to data brokers for their independent marketing. Certain disclosures involving advertising identifiers or advertising partners may nevertheless be characterized as a “sale,” “sharing,” or use for “targeted advertising” under some U.S. state laws even where no money is exchanged for personal information. Where those laws apply, SYNAG will provide the required opt-out mechanism and will honour legally valid browser-based opt-out preference signals where required.
If SYNAG accepts political advertising, it may maintain a public Political Ad Registry or similar transparency record. Information displayed may include the advertiser or sponsor, the person or entity on whose behalf the advertisement was purchased, campaign dates, amounts or ranges where required, and a copy or description of the advertisement. SYNAG will limit public disclosure to information required by law or reasonably necessary for transparent political-advertising practices.
Where a self-service account-deletion feature is available, you may use it to request closure of your account. You may also contact synagmedia@gmail.com. Account deletion may be subject to identity verification and lawful retention requirements. Closing an account does not necessarily delete published journalism, public comments or submissions already incorporated into editorial records where SYNAG has a lawful reason to retain them.
SYNAG may send newsletters, breaking-news alerts, service messages and, where permitted, promotional electronic messages. Where Canada’s anti-spam legislation or similar laws apply, SYNAG will obtain required consent, identify the sender and provide a functioning unsubscribe method. Security, transactional, service or legally required communications may continue where appropriate even after you opt out of promotional messages.
If you post, submit or authorize SYNAG to publish a comment, photograph, video, letter, article, profile, testimonial or other material, information contained in that submission may become public, be indexed by search engines, shared on social media, republished or syndicated where permitted, preserved in SYNAG’s archives and copied or redistributed by persons outside SYNAG’s control.
SYNAG pages may contain links to third-party sites or embedded videos, maps, posts, advertisements or other external services. Those third parties may independently collect information. SYNAG does not control their privacy practices, and this Notice does not govern information they collect directly. You should review the privacy policies and settings of the third-party services you use.
SYNAG is a general-audience news service and is not designed primarily for children under 13. SYNAG does not knowingly use personal information of children for behavioural advertising where prohibited by law. Where a young person is not legally capable of providing valid consent, consent from a parent, guardian or other authorized person may be required.
If SYNAG learns that personal information of a child was collected contrary to applicable law, it will take reasonable steps to address or delete the information as appropriate. This does not prevent SYNAG from collecting, using or publishing information concerning minors where lawfully and appropriately required for legitimate journalism. Editorial decisions involving children should take account of their heightened privacy interests and vulnerability.
Depending on the law applicable to you, you may have rights to request:
These rights are subject to applicable exceptions. SYNAG may be unable or may not be required to provide access to information protected by legal privilege, information about another individual, confidential commercial information, confidential-source information, information subject to a journalistic exception or exclusion, or other information that applicable law permits or requires SYNAG to withhold.
SYNAG may take reasonable steps to verify your identity before processing a privacy request. Requests may be submitted to the Privacy Office using the contact information below.
Where Québec private-sector privacy legislation applies, SYNAG will comply with applicable requirements concerning transparency, consent, governance, privacy impact assessments, confidentiality settings and individual rights. Depending on the circumstances, Québec residents may have rights of access and rectification, withdrawal of consent, cessation of dissemination or de-indexation where provided by law, and portability of eligible computerized personal information.
Where required by Québec law, SYNAG will provide notices and choices for technology that identifies, locates or profiles an individual and will conduct required privacy impact assessments, including for specified information-system projects or certain processing outside Québec.
If an applicable U.S. state privacy law grants you consumer rights, those rights may include access, correction, deletion, portability, and opt-outs from certain sales, sharing, targeted advertising or profiling, as well as appeal rights. SYNAG will not discriminate against a person for exercising a protected privacy right.
Where required, SYNAG will recognize legally valid browser-based opt-out signals, such as Global Privacy Control, and provide a “Your Privacy Choices” or similar advertising-choice mechanism.
If you have a concern about SYNAG’s handling of personal information, contact the Privacy Office. We will review the concern and respond in accordance with applicable law. You may also have the right to contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the applicable provincial or other privacy regulator.
