40 Years of Craft & Culture: How House of Embroideries and Crafts Became a CNE Legacy

Since 1986, husband-and-wife duo Cesar and Neftalie Abrenica have run House of Embroideries and Crafts, a beloved fixture in the CNE's International Pavilion. For 40 years, the couple has personally hand-set their booth, showcasing shell crafts and hand-embroidered Barong Tagalog from Batangas, Baguio, Bicol, and Cebu. Beyond the nostalgia it brings older generations, the booth has become a bridge for young Filipino-Canadians rediscovering their roots — and for curious Canadians encountering Filipino craftsmanship for the first time. Every sale, Neftalie says, also supports artisans and workers back in the Philippines, making the booth as much a mission as a business.

Faith, Food, and Filipino Hospitality Feeding Thousands Gallery11 photos

Faith, Food, and Filipino Hospitality Feeding Thousands

Ayuda sa Canada (Help in Canada), a volunteer-run initiative under God's Strength Ministries, led by Filipina Doris Greaves and her husband Pastor Dave. What began as food handed out of their family garage has grown into a monthly lifeline for thousands across Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, and Mississauga. Rooted in Filipino values of bayanihan (communal unity) and hospitality, Greaves treats every distribution as more than logistics—it's an act of dignity. She describes a shifting clientele: no longer just newcomers facing temporary setbacks, but working professionals and fixed-income seniors who "never imagined they would need food support." Her goal now is to build a permanent food pantry and community space, so that food distribution becomes something more lasting than a monthly stop—a place people know they belong.

Terms of Use

for Digital Services

SYNAG · Effective date: August 13, 2026  |  Last update: August 13, 2026

Table of Contents

SYNAG Terms at a Glance

These Terms of Use govern access to and use of SYNAG’s websites, accounts, newsletters, video services, submission tools, news-tip channels, advertising interfaces, and other digital products that link to these Terms. They form a legal agreement between you and Synag Media Corp.

Important: These Terms contain rules about intellectual property, user submissions, prohibited uses, disclaimers, limits of liability, and the law and courts that apply to disputes. Nothing in these Terms removes rights that cannot lawfully be waived, including applicable consumer-protection rights.

At a glance

  • ◆Use SYNAG for lawful, personal and non-commercial purposes unless SYNAG expressly authorizes another use.
  • ◆Do not scrape, harvest, reproduce at scale, build datasets from, or use SYNAG content to train or develop artificial-intelligence or machine-learning systems without written permission, except to the extent applicable law gives you a non-waivable right to do so.
  • ◆You retain ownership of content you submit, but you give SYNAG the rights reasonably required to review, publish, distribute, archive, promote and moderate that content.
  • ◆A news tip does not automatically create a confidential-source relationship. Confidentiality or anonymity must be expressly agreed where appropriate.
  • ◆SYNAG may moderate, remove or decline submissions and may suspend accounts for violations, security risks, abuse or unlawful conduct.
  • ◆News and other information may contain errors, omissions or delays. SYNAG provides journalism and information, not individualized legal, medical, financial or other professional advice.

I. Agreement and Scope

1. Acceptance of these Terms

These Terms of Use for Digital Services (the “Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and Synag Media Corp., operating as SYNAG (“SYNAG,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). They apply whenever you access or use synag.ca and any other website, application, account, newsletter, video service, digital product, submission tool or online service operated by SYNAG that links to these Terms (collectively, the “Services”). By accessing or using the Services, creating an account, submitting content, subscribing to a service, or otherwise indicating acceptance, you agree to these Terms and to any supplemental terms that expressly apply to a particular feature. If you do not agree, do not use the Services.

2. Supplemental policies

The following policies, where posted or presented to you, form part of the framework governing your use of SYNAG: the SYNAG Privacy Notice, Cookie Notice or Privacy Choices notice, Editorial Standards and Corrections Policy, Community or Submission Guidelines, Political Advertising Policy, contest rules, subscription or purchase terms, and any other feature-specific terms. If supplemental terms conflict with these Terms, the supplemental terms control for the feature or transaction to which they expressly apply.

3. Changes to these Terms

SYNAG may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in law, technology, security, business practices or the Services. The current version will be posted with its effective or last-updated date. Where required by applicable law, SYNAG will provide additional notice of a material change and, where required, obtain consent. Continued use after an effective change constitutes acceptance only to the extent permitted by applicable law.

II. Eligibility and Accounts

4. Eligibility

You may use publicly available portions of the Services if you are legally capable of doing so. You must be at least 13 years old to create a SYNAG account unless a higher minimum age is required by applicable law or by a particular service. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you should use account-based or paid features only with the involvement of a parent or legal guardian where required.

5. Registration information

If you create an account, you agree to provide information that is accurate, current and not misleading, and to keep it reasonably up to date. You may not impersonate another person, create an account using another person’s identity without authority, or create accounts for deceptive, abusive or unlawful purposes.

6. Account security

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and for activity occurring through your account to the extent reasonably within your control. Do not sell, transfer or share an account in a manner that defeats access controls or subscription restrictions. Notify SYNAG promptly if you reasonably believe your account has been compromised.

III. Permitted Use of the Services

7. Limited licence

Subject to these Terms, SYNAG grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to access and use the Services and SYNAG Content for your personal, lawful and non-commercial use. This licence does not transfer ownership of any content or intellectual-property right.

8. Ordinary sharing and linking

You may link to publicly available SYNAG webpages and use sharing tools that SYNAG makes available, provided you do not falsely imply sponsorship, endorsement or affiliation, circumvent access controls, frame SYNAG content in a misleading way, or reproduce more content than permitted by law or by written permission. Nothing in these Terms restricts a use that is expressly permitted by applicable law, including applicable fair-dealing or other statutory user rights.

9. Prohibited conduct

You may not use the Services in a way that is unlawful, abusive, deceptive, harmful to SYNAG or another person, or inconsistent with these Terms. Without limiting the foregoing, you may not:

  • ◆access restricted areas, accounts, systems or data without authorization, or attempt to bypass authentication, paywalls, rate limits, robots controls or other access restrictions;
  • ◆interfere with, disrupt, overload, damage or impair the Services, servers, networks or security systems;
  • ◆introduce malware, malicious code, denial-of-service traffic or other harmful technology;
  • ◆probe, scan or test vulnerabilities except through a SYNAG-authorized security or vulnerability-disclosure program;
  • ◆use the Services to stalk, harass, threaten, defraud, impersonate, dox or unlawfully invade another person’s privacy;
  • ◆publish or transmit unlawful content, including content that infringes intellectual-property rights or is prohibited by court order;
  • ◆use SYNAG branding, logos, design or content in a way that falsely suggests that SYNAG endorses you, your product, political position, campaign or organization;
  • ◆resell, syndicate, commercially exploit or systematically redistribute the Services or SYNAG Content without written authorization; or
  • ◆assist or encourage another person to do any of the foregoing.

IV. SYNAG Content and Intellectual Property

10. Ownership

The Services and the materials made available through them—including articles, headlines, text, photographs, graphics, illustrations, audio, video, livestreams, databases, compilations, metadata, software, code, interfaces, page designs, trademarks, logos and other materials (“SYNAG Content”)—are owned by or licensed to SYNAG and are protected by applicable copyright, trademark and other laws.

11. Restrictions on reuse

Except as expressly permitted by these Terms, by written permission, by a separate licence, or by applicable law, you may not copy, republish, reproduce, distribute, transmit, display, perform, modify, translate, adapt, create derivative works from, sell, license, archive, database, syndicate or otherwise exploit SYNAG Content. Commercial republication, systematic copying and republication of substantial portions of the Services require prior written permission.

12. Trademarks

SYNAG, Synag Media Corp., associated logos, product names, designs and slogans are trademarks or trade indicia of SYNAG or its licensors. No licence to use a SYNAG trademark is granted except as expressly authorized in writing or as permitted by law.

V. Automated Access, Scraping and Artificial Intelligence

13. Automated collection

Except for ordinary indexing by general-purpose public search engines in accordance with SYNAG’s published technical controls, or where SYNAG has given written authorization, you may not use bots, crawlers, spiders, scrapers, scripts, automated agents or similar tools to harvest, extract, copy, monitor, mirror or systematically collect SYNAG Content, user information, metadata or other data from the Services.

14. Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Unless SYNAG expressly authorizes it in writing, you may not use SYNAG Content or data obtained from the Services to train, fine-tune, ground, evaluate, benchmark or develop a generative-AI system, large language model, machine-learning model or comparable automated system; to build a commercial dataset; or to generate a substitute publication or service that reproduces or competes with substantial elements of SYNAG Content.

This section does not prohibit a use that applicable law gives you a non-waivable right to make. Technical measures, robots instructions or similar controls do not expand rights beyond those otherwise granted by these Terms or applicable law.

VI. User Content and Public Submissions

15. User Content

The Services may allow you to submit comments, letters, photographs, videos, audio, messages, profile information, community posts, story submissions or other materials (“User Content”). You retain ownership of intellectual-property rights you hold in your User Content, subject to the licence below.

16. Licence to SYNAG

When you submit User Content for posting, publication, review or use through the Services, you grant SYNAG and its affiliates, contractors, distributors and service providers a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable licence to host, store, reproduce, edit, adapt, translate, publish, communicate, transmit, distribute, display, perform, promote, archive and otherwise use that User Content in connection with SYNAG’s journalism, editorial operations, Services, promotion of the Services and archival record. The licence lasts for as long as reasonably necessary for those purposes and, for content that has been published or incorporated into journalistic material, may continue indefinitely for archival, historical, legal, syndication and integrity-of-the-record purposes.

Where permitted by law, you consent to reasonable editorial changes, formatting, cropping, translation, captioning and technical adaptation. SYNAG will not claim ownership of your underlying User Content solely because you submitted it.

17. Your responsibility for public submissions

For User Content intended for public posting or publication, you represent that you have the rights and permissions reasonably necessary to submit it and grant the licence above, and that your submission does not knowingly violate applicable law, another person’s intellectual-property rights, privacy rights or a binding confidentiality obligation. These representations do not require a person sending a bona fide news tip to warrant the ultimate truth of every allegation; news tips are governed separately below.

18. No compensation unless agreed

Unless SYNAG expressly agrees otherwise in writing, submitting User Content does not entitle you to payment, royalties, credit or other compensation. Separate contributor, freelance, licensing, employment or commissioning agreements prevail where they apply.

VII. News Tips, Sources and Journalistic Submissions

19. News tips

SYNAG welcomes bona fide news tips and source communications. A tip may contain allegations, documents, photographs, recordings or other information that SYNAG may investigate, verify, edit or decline to pursue. Sending a tip does not guarantee publication, response, payment or attribution.

20. Confidentiality and anonymity

Submitting material through a general web form, ordinary email, social-media message or other routine channel does not by itself create a confidential-source relationship, solicitor-client relationship, fiduciary relationship or promise of anonymity. If confidentiality or anonymity is important, say so before or when providing the information and use any secure source-contact method identified by SYNAG. A commitment by SYNAG to protect a source’s identity should be express and may be subject to applicable law and court process.

21. Rights in submitted tip materials

By voluntarily providing material to SYNAG for journalistic consideration, you authorize SYNAG to receive, review, copy, preserve, verify, analyze and use the material for legitimate editorial and journalistic purposes. If you own copyright or other rights in material you submit, you grant SYNAG a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, edit, publish, communicate, distribute and archive that material for reporting and related editorial purposes, unless SYNAG agrees otherwise in writing. This licence does not transfer ownership of your original rights.

22. Lawful sourcing

Do not obtain information for SYNAG by hacking, unlawfully intercepting communications, trespassing, stealing devices, impersonating another person to defeat security, or otherwise committing an unlawful act. If material may be subject to a court order, publication ban, sealing order, confidentiality obligation or legal privilege, identify that concern when submitting it if you are able to do so lawfully.

VIII. Community Standards and Moderation

23. Standards

SYNAG may establish additional Community or Submission Guidelines. Without limiting those guidelines, public-facing User Content must not contain unlawful threats, targeted harassment, hate content prohibited by law, malicious impersonation, spam, malware, unlawful disclosure of personal information, or material that infringes another person’s rights.

24. Moderation

SYNAG may review, moderate, label, restrict, decline, edit or remove User Content, and may limit participation in interactive features, where SYNAG reasonably considers it necessary to enforce these Terms, protect users or staff, preserve editorial standards, address legal risk, prevent abuse or maintain the functionality of the Services. SYNAG is not obliged to publish or retain any submission and does not undertake to monitor all User Content.

25. Editorial independence

Submission of content, purchase of advertising, participation in a promotion, creation of an account or other commercial relationship does not entitle any person to influence SYNAG’s independent editorial judgments.

IX. Editorial Content, Corrections and Reliance

26. News, analysis and opinion

SYNAG may publish news, analysis, commentary, opinion, interviews, live coverage, user submissions, syndicated material and third-party content. Views expressed by guests, commentators, contributors, advertisers or users are their own unless SYNAG expressly states otherwise.

27. Corrections and updates

News develops quickly. SYNAG may correct, update, clarify, remove, archive or add context to content when appropriate. Requests concerning alleged factual errors in published journalism should be directed through SYNAG’s editorial correction or contact process. A request does not guarantee that content will be changed or removed.

28. Not professional advice

SYNAG Content is provided for general news and informational purposes. It is not individualized legal, medical, financial, investment, tax, immigration, safety or other professional advice. You should obtain advice from an appropriately qualified professional before making decisions that require professional judgment.

29. Emergency information

Do not rely on the Services as your sole source for emergency warnings, evacuation instructions, medical emergencies, public-safety directions or time-critical government information. Use official emergency and government channels where immediate action may be required.

X. Advertising, Sponsored Content and Political Advertising

30. Advertising

The Services may contain advertising, sponsorships, branded or sponsored content, affiliate links or other commercial messages. Advertising helps support SYNAG’s operations but does not, by itself, constitute SYNAG’s endorsement of an advertiser, product, service or claim.

31. Sponsored or branded content

SYNAG may label paid or sponsored material to distinguish it from independent editorial content. Additional advertising or sponsored-content terms may apply to advertisers, agencies and commercial partners.

32. Political advertising

Where SYNAG accepts political advertising, additional eligibility, authorization, identification, record-keeping, transparency and disclosure requirements may apply. Political advertising may be subject to SYNAG’s Political Advertising Policy and Political Ad Registry, as well as applicable election and advertising laws. SYNAG may decline or remove an advertisement where reasonably necessary to comply with law, platform standards or SYNAG policy.

XI. Subscriptions, Purchases and Promotions

33. Paid services

SYNAG may offer paid subscriptions, memberships, event access, products or other paid features. The price, billing period, renewal terms, taxes, cancellation rights, refund rules and other transaction-specific details will be disclosed at or before purchase where required by law. Those transaction terms form part of your agreement with SYNAG.

34. Consumer rights

Nothing in these Terms excludes, restricts or waives a statutory consumer right that cannot lawfully be waived. Where Alberta consumer-protection legislation applies to an internet sales contract or other consumer transaction, the applicable statutory disclosure, cancellation and remedy rights continue to apply notwithstanding these Terms.

35. Promotions and contests

Contests, giveaways and promotions may be governed by separate official rules, eligibility criteria and privacy notices. If the official rules conflict with these Terms, the official rules govern the promotion.

XII. Third-Party Services and Embedded Content

36. Links and embeds

The Services may link to or embed third-party websites, social-media posts, videos, maps, advertisements, payment services, widgets, applications or other services. Third-party services are not controlled by SYNAG merely because they are linked or embedded. Your dealings with them may be governed by their own terms and privacy practices.

37. Third-party content

SYNAG may license, quote, reference, syndicate or display material from third parties. Unless expressly stated, SYNAG does not guarantee the availability, accuracy, security, products, services or practices of an independent third party.

XIII. Privacy

38. Privacy Notice

SYNAG’s collection, use, disclosure, retention and protection of personal information is described in the SYNAG Privacy Notice for Digital Platforms and related privacy notices. By using the Services, you acknowledge that you have had an opportunity to review those notices. Consent to particular privacy practices will be obtained where required by applicable law and is not created merely by this clause.

39. Cookies and analytics

The Services may use cookies and similar technologies for necessary functionality, preferences, analytics and advertising as described in SYNAG’s Privacy Notice and Cookie Notice or Privacy Choices interface. Where applicable law requires a choice or consent for non-essential technologies, SYNAG will provide the required mechanism.

XIV. Service Availability and Security

40. Changes to the Services

SYNAG may add, change, suspend, restrict or discontinue features or content, and may impose reasonable technical or security limits. If a change affects a paid service, SYNAG will comply with applicable contractual and consumer-protection obligations.

41. Security

You must not attempt to defeat security features or obtain unauthorized access to systems, data or accounts. SYNAG may take reasonable steps to investigate suspected security incidents, preserve evidence, protect users, and cooperate with lawful authorities where appropriate.

XV. Disclaimers and Limitation of Liability

42. “As is” and “as available”

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SERVICES AND SYNAG CONTENT ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” SYNAG DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICES WILL ALWAYS BE AVAILABLE, UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT EVERY ITEM OF CONTENT WILL BE COMPLETE, CURRENT OR FREE FROM DELAY, OMISSION OR TECHNICAL ERROR. SYNAG DOES NOT DISCLAIM ANY WARRANTY, CONDITION, RIGHT OR REMEDY THAT APPLICABLE LAW DOES NOT PERMIT TO BE DISCLAIMED.

43. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, SYNAG, ITS AFFILIATES, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, CONTRIBUTORS, CONTRACTORS, LICENSORS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, PUNITIVE OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF GOODWILL, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SERVICES, EVEN IF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH LOSS WAS KNOWN. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SYNAG’S AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR A CLAIM ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO A FREE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED CAD $100. FOR A CLAIM ARISING FROM A PAID CONSUMER SERVICE, SYNAG’S AGGREGATE LIABILITY WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF CAD $100 OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO SYNAG FOR THAT SERVICE DURING THE SIX MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM. THESE LIMITS DO NOT APPLY WHERE AND TO THE EXTENT APPLICABLE LAW PROHIBITS THE LIMITATION, INCLUDING LIABILITY THAT CANNOT LAWFULLY BE LIMITED OR EXCLUDED.

44. Allocation of risk

The limitations in this section are intended to allocate risk reasonably in connection with a digital news and information service. They apply only to the extent enforceable in the jurisdiction that applies to the claim.

XVI. Indemnity

45. Your responsibility

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless SYNAG and its affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agents from third-party claims, losses, liabilities and reasonable legal costs arising from: (a) User Content you submit for public posting or publication; (b) your material breach of these Terms; or (c) your unlawful or unauthorized use of the Services. This obligation does not apply to the extent a claim results from SYNAG’s own negligence, wilful misconduct or other conduct for which indemnification may not lawfully be required. SYNAG may assume control of the defence of a claim covered by this section, acting reasonably. You agree to provide reasonable cooperation, at SYNAG’s expense for out-of-pocket cooperation costs where appropriate.

XVII. Suspension and Termination

46. By you

You may stop using the Services at any time. If account-deletion functionality is available, you may request deletion in accordance with the Privacy Notice and applicable law. Deleting an account does not necessarily remove previously published journalism, archived material, legal records or User Content that SYNAG is entitled or required to retain.

47. By SYNAG

SYNAG may restrict, suspend or terminate an account or access to interactive features where SYNAG reasonably believes there has been a material or repeated violation of these Terms, unlawful conduct, fraud, abuse, a security threat, evasion of prior enforcement, or conduct that materially threatens SYNAG, its staff, users or systems. Where appropriate and legally required, SYNAG may provide notice or an opportunity to address the issue.

48. Survival

Provisions that by their nature should continue after termination—including intellectual-property provisions, licences necessary for published or archived submissions, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnities, dispute provisions and general legal terms—survive termination to the extent applicable.

XIX. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

51. Informal resolution

Before commencing formal proceedings, you and SYNAG are encouraged to make a reasonable good-faith effort to resolve a dispute by written notice describing the issue and the requested resolution. This clause does not prevent either party from seeking urgent injunctive relief, preserving a limitation period, or using a regulator or statutory process where permitted.

52. Governing law

Subject to any mandatory law that applies to you and cannot lawfully be excluded, these Terms and your use of the Services are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable in Alberta, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.

53. Courts

Subject to mandatory consumer-protection or jurisdictional rights that apply to you, the courts located in Edmonton, Alberta will have jurisdiction over disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or the Services, and you and SYNAG attorn to those courts. Nothing in these Terms requires an Alberta consumer to waive a right to bring a dispute before a court where applicable consumer-protection legislation preserves that right.

XX. General Provisions

54. Entire agreement

These Terms, together with incorporated and applicable supplemental terms, constitute the agreement between you and SYNAG concerning the Services to which they apply, except where you and SYNAG have entered into a separate written agreement that expressly governs the same subject matter.

55. Severability

If a provision of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, it will be interpreted or limited to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable where permitted by law, and the remaining provisions will continue in effect.

56. No waiver

A failure or delay by SYNAG to enforce a provision does not waive the right to enforce it later. A waiver is effective only if clearly made by an authorized SYNAG representative.

57. Assignment

You may not assign your account or rights under these Terms without SYNAG’s consent. SYNAG may assign these Terms in connection with a corporate reorganization, financing, merger, acquisition, sale of business or assets, or similar transaction, subject to applicable law and the Privacy Notice.

58. No agency

These Terms do not create a partnership, joint venture, employment, agency or fiduciary relationship between you and SYNAG.

59. Language

The English version of these Terms governs unless applicable law requires otherwise or SYNAG expressly provides that another language version is equally authoritative. If SYNAG publishes a French version for Québec or other users, the applicable version will be identified at the time of publication.

60. Electronic communications

Where permitted by law, notices and agreements may be provided electronically, including through the Services or by email to the address associated with your account. Nothing in this clause limits statutory notice requirements that prescribe another method.
