40 Years of Craft & Culture: How House of Embroideries and Crafts Became a CNE Legacy

Since 1986, husband-and-wife duo Cesar and Neftalie Abrenica have run House of Embroideries and Crafts, a beloved fixture in the CNE's International Pavilion. For 40 years, the couple has personally hand-set their booth, showcasing shell crafts and hand-embroidered Barong Tagalog from Batangas, Baguio, Bicol, and Cebu. Beyond the nostalgia it brings older generations, the booth has become a bridge for young Filipino-Canadians rediscovering their roots — and for curious Canadians encountering Filipino craftsmanship for the first time. Every sale, Neftalie says, also supports artisans and workers back in the Philippines, making the booth as much a mission as a business.

Faith, Food, and Filipino Hospitality Feeding Thousands

Ayuda sa Canada (Help in Canada), a volunteer-run initiative under God's Strength Ministries, led by Filipina Doris Greaves and her husband Pastor Dave. What began as food handed out of their family garage has grown into a monthly lifeline for thousands across Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, and Mississauga. Rooted in Filipino values of bayanihan (communal unity) and hospitality, Greaves treats every distribution as more than logistics—it's an act of dignity. She describes a shifting clientele: no longer just newcomers facing temporary setbacks, but working professionals and fixed-income seniors who "never imagined they would need food support." Her goal now is to build a permanent food pantry and community space, so that food distribution becomes something more lasting than a monthly stop—a place people know they belong.

SYNAG Media Gains Traction, Surges Past 100K Impressions in Debut Month

"This is just the beginning. Something big is coming," said company CEO, as SYNAG projects audience engagement will triple or quadruple by end of the year. In 2027, it is modestly forecasted to grow five to six times its current volume as new technological and editorial innovations roll out.

EDMONTON, ALBERTA — SYNAG Media Corporation has break expectations in its inaugural 30 days of operation, demonstrating rapid growth and immediate audience engagement across its digital news ecosystem. Operating as Canada’s first digital media outlet offering bilingual coverage in both English and Tagalog, SYNAG has quickly emerged as an essential hub for the vibrant Filipino Canadian community.

Even without any public launching campaigns, SYNAG achieved near-instant momentum. In just four weeks of initial operation, the platform is already approaching 10,000 website visits, averaging nearly 2,500 organic visitors every week. On social media channels, data from Meta confirms that SYNAG’s stories generated a combined total of more than 115,000 views and clicks on Facebook, a staggering number for a starting media outlet.

“In just our first month, we can already feel momentum building around SYNAG,” noted Atty. Bernard Gregorio, CEO of SYNAG Media Corporation.

For corporate sponsors, brands, and advertisers looking to tap into a targeted and high-yield acquisition of a rapidly growing demographic, SYNAG offers an unmatched, turn-key viable portal to directly reach Filipino Canadians from coast to coast.

“More people are finding the platform, businesses and organizations are reaching out, and new conversations around stories, advertising, and partnerships are opening up.” Gregorio said.

SYNAG’s immediate success stems from its commitment to telling stories that matter to the diaspora. In its first 30 days alone, multiple original features reached thousands of reads and views.

Standout coverage included the moving story of temporary foreign worker Esa Garcia’s struggle with cancer, the inspiring career feat of Dr. Marissa Balles, who reclaimed her dental profession at age 56, the recognition of Nelson Rodriguez as one of the Top 100 OFW Global Businessmen, and in-depth coverage on immigration policies, remittance trends, tariff impacts, and extreme weather events affecting families locally and abroad.

“We try our best to uncover the voices shaping our communities, celebrate the dreamers who build new beginnings, the changemakers who inspire, and the generations creating a legacy,” said Cheryl Ravelo-Gagalac, Multimedia Producer at SYNAG Media. “From moments of struggle to moments of hope, we connect cultures, amplify voices, and tell stories that matter.”

Beyond the impressive traffic numbers, SYNAG has laid a rock-solid corporate and technical foundation designed to maximize value for advertising partners. SYNAG has completed its federal registration as a legitimate Canadian corporation, and enacted a principled editorial policy that ensures a culture of discipline, responsible journalism and brand-safe content environments.

The media company also instituted a strategic Capital Expenditure Plan designed to ensure long-term fiscal health while maintaining a modern and intuitive digital platform that features dynamic interchanging themes, a live-wire news system, seamless social sharing links, real-time weather tracking across Canada, and real-time exchange rate updates for over 100 countries worldwide.

“Our focus now is simple: produce stronger original journalism, grow our audience, bring in the right partners, and rally the community behind this initiative so SYNAG can grow sustainably. We also want to stay focused on the issues that matter to Filipino Canadians: immigration, employment, business, public affairs, and community life,” Gregorio said.

With its current organic trajectory, SYNAG projects audience engagement will most likely triple or quadruple before the end of the year. Looking ahead to 2027, it is modestly forecasted to grow five to six times its current volume as new technological and editorial innovations roll out.

“This is just the beginning. Something big is coming for SYNAG, and we’ll be sharing it with the community very soon,” said Gregorio.

For prospective sponsors, SYNAG offers a rare chance to lock-in on high-visibility placements and direct access to one million strong Filipino Canadian consumers with high purchasing power. Brands and organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities and advertising packages can connect directly with the SYNAG Advertising team to secure early-mover positioning.
